The Modesto Nuts have signed a player development contract with the Mariners to 2020, but they also purchased a majority stake in the franchise. There are now 5 PDCs that expire at the end of the season at the High A level. I assume that the Mariners weren’t happy being in High Desert and wanted to ensure that they would play in an environment that they prefer going forward.
