Update on 2021 Minor League Baseball – Revision 2

Based on a comment, I found out that the Vancouver Canadians will be the A’s High A affiliate in the Northwest League.  So I removed my question mark on that one.

I didn’t make any other changes to the High A – Low A jumble since I have no idea what will happen and would just be more random guesses.  Although I did reorganize it to put the High A teams above the Low A teams, rather than keeping the old structure and relabeling.

So let me know what you think of the latest version.  I’ll keep making updates when new information is available.

This is my best attempt at piecing together the leaked information with some attempt at logic and keeping as much in place from 2019 as reasonable.  Red denotes changes.  Blue denotes ownership stake.  Question marks are things I made up.

  1. Al says:

I’m surprised that the A’s aren’t going to be affiliated with Beloit any longer. Back in May, the team owner said he’s had “encouraging conversations” with Oakland.

The A’s are known for chasing new stadiums (Nashville, Las Vegas) so this seemed like a done deal to me. It will be interesting to see who ends up with Beloit.

  2. Chin says:

@Al, I think MLB is making the assignments. MLB teams can make requests/recommendations, but the ultimate decision will be made by the league office. Though if the NW League is going to be only six teams at High A, then there will have to be some West Coast teams elsewhere. But I’ve heard the Dodgers and Padres love being in the Midwest League, so my guess is it will be them who stick around the MW.

  3. Al says:

    @ Chin

I think you are right on all of these accounts. There was a JJ Cooper article back in May of this year where he said:

“Even the very structure of the expected MLB proposal isn’t 100 percent certain. A number of sources indicated that three West Coast teams have expressed to MLB that they would prefer to keep their current low Class A affiliations rather than move to the Northwest League, which is expected to field six low Class A teams for West Coast MLB clubs. There are only eight West Coast clubs, so if three balk at moving to the Northwest League, the geographical advantages of a West Coast low Class A league could become a liability–East Coast and Midwest teams have frequently complained in the past about being stuck in minor league cities on the West Coast, something MLB has worked to avoid in their discussions on reorganizing the minor leagues.”

I assumed the three were the A’s, Dodgers, Padres. But if that Vancouver rumor is true, then Oakland was swayed to the NWL. I think Mike identified the most like parent clubs for NWL teams – Mariners, D’Backs, Angels, Giants, A’s, Rockies. There could be another random team like the Royals in mix too – depends what we see in the MWL.

  4. infoguy says:

Sandy Alderson just said that Binghamton will remain a Mets affiliate on his press conference.

  5. Al says:

Big surprise for everyone. Binghamton seemed to be done for. It will be interesting to see which leagues Binghamton and Brooklyn end up at. Geographically speaking, Brooklyn makes more sense in the new high A league.

  6. Thomas A Mills says:

    Here’s where Mets stand

Triple-A will remain in Syracuse. Double-A will shift to Brooklyn. Binghamton will be demoted to High-A. St. Lucie will be Low-A. Columbia has been dropped.

    _________

So you have to figure Binghamton is Mid-Atlantic League

  7. Thomas A Mills says:

I guess that word was wrong because most seem to think Brooklyn is High A.

  8. Mike McCann says:

It’s definitely interesting that Binghamton survived the cut after rumors for many years (even before the 2019 contraction announcement) that Brooklyn would become their AA affiliate.

  9. Chin says:

I’ve seen both configurations for Binghamton and Brooklyn. BA said Binghamton will stay at AA (but still sounds like interpretation/speculation on their part, and not definitive). Ballpark Digest said it’s not known yet, and that moving Binghamton to High A has been discussed.

    https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/binghamton-brooklyn-survive-as-mets-announce-2021-minor-league-affiliates/

    https://ballparkdigest.com/2020/11/10/new-york-mets-keep-core-of-milb-affiliates-in-place/

That Ballpark Digest article also says an AL Central team is rumored for Columbia to replace the Mets. I think we can eliminate Chicago, Detroit and Minnesota. And if Columbia is a High A team, then Cleveland can probably be eliminated as well.
